Is Hyderabad Safe for Solo Women Travellers? A Local’s View

Short answer: yes. Hyderabad is a safe and welcoming city for women travelling alone. Women live, work, study and travel on their own across the city every day, and visitors are met with the warmth and hospitality Hyderabad is known for. As in any city in the world, a little common sense goes a long way, and that is all you need. We are from Hyderabad and host thousands of guests every month, so this is a local’s view.

A city that is used to independent travellers

Hyderabad is one of India’s big hubs for IT, pharma and education, and women are part of its offices, campuses, markets, restaurants and metro every day. Solo visitors, whether here for work, a conference, a layover or a short holiday, will find a friendly city with plenty to see in a few days. Our 2-day and 3-day plans show how much fits in.

Help is easy to find

  • Dial 112, the single emergency number for police, ambulance and fire.
  • Hyderabad Police run SHE Teams, a wing dedicated to women’s safety since 2014. Their current contact details are on the Hyderabad Police website.
  • Rajiv Gandhi International Airport has a police outpost and a 24-hour women’s help desk in the arrivals area.
  • Hotels with a 24-hour reception, ours included, can help at any hour.

Getting around comfortably

  • Hyderabad Metro has women-only coaches and reserved seats, and it is a clean, easy way to cross the city.
  • App cabs are widely used, with trip sharing, a ride PIN and an SOS button in the app.
  • At night, a pre-arranged hotel transfer is the simplest choice; see airport pick-up and drop options.
  • For the old city, go by cab and plan your day around the opening hours in our itinerary guide.

Respecting the city

Hyderabad is a warm, welcoming city where people of many backgrounds live side by side. Do what a good guest does anywhere in the world: greet people, dress comfortably for the weather and the setting, follow the guidance posted at sights and heritage places, and ask before photographing people. Visitors who bring a little courtesy get the same in return, along with helpful strangers, wonderful food and a lot of hospitality.

Common sense, like in any city

Every city in the world has areas that are best avoided after dark or when you are on your own, and Hyderabad is no different. The same few habits work everywhere:

  • Ask your hotel which areas to skip at night, and what a fair fare looks like for your trip.
  • Plan your ride back before you go out in the evening.
  • Keep your phone charged and your valuables close.
  • Share your live location with a friend or family member if you like.
  • Trust your instinct. If something feels off, move on to a busy, well-lit place.

Our tip. Tell reception your plan for the day and what time you expect to be back. We will happily suggest the best route and the best time to go, and we are here at the desk all night.
