Hyderabad in Summer: Heat, Timings and What to Do

Short answer: Hyderabad is hot from March to June, and May is the hottest month, with average highs around 40 degrees C. You can still enjoy a summer trip if you sightsee early and late, rest indoors through the afternoon, drink plenty of water and dress light. The monsoon brings relief from June, along with rain. Locals plan their day the same way.

Staying comfortable

  • Avoid going out between about 12 noon and 3 p.m.
  • Drink water often, with ORS, lemon water or buttermilk; go easy on sugary and fizzy drinks.
  • Wear loose, light cotton and cover your head in the sun.
  • Rest in an air-conditioned or well-ventilated room in the afternoon.
  • If you feel dizzy, sick or very hot, rest in the shade, drink water and seek medical help if it does not pass.

A summer day, hour by hour

  • Early morning: outdoor sights. The Statue of Equality opens at 7 a.m.; Golconda opens at about 9 a.m. and sometimes earlier.
  • Late morning: finish the outdoor part before it gets hot.
  • 12 to 3 p.m.: rest, or go indoors: Salar Jung Museum (10 a.m. to 6 p.m., closed Fridays) or the halls of Chowmahalla Palace (closed Fridays).
  • 4 to 6 p.m.: lighter outdoor visits, such as the old city markets, once the sun is lower.
  • Evening: Hussain Sagar lake, Lumbini Park, Birla Mandir or a sound and light show at Golconda.

Our tip. Leave the hotel by 7:30 a.m., be back in an air-conditioned room by noon, and go out again at 5 p.m. That is how we spend the hot months, and it works for visitors too.

Food and drink

In the heat, choose fresh lime soda, buttermilk, coconut water and plenty of plain water. For vegetarians, see pure veg food near Hyderabad airport.
