Short answer: two days cover the headline sights of Hyderabad, and three days is comfortable. The old city (Charminar, Laad Bazaar, Chowmahalla, Salar Jung) fills one day, Golconda and the Qutb Shahi Tombs fill the second, and a third day lets you add a long trip such as Ramoji Film City or the Statue of Equality. Friday matters, because two major sights close on it.
We are from Hyderabad, so this is the plan we give friends who visit.
The sights, with timings
| Place | Usual hours | Notes | Road distance from our hotel (approx.) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Charminar | Open daily, entry until about 5:30 p.m. | Crowded; the Laad Bazaar lanes are busy | 17 km |
| Salar Jung Museum | 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., last entry about 5:15 p.m. | Closed on Fridays | 18 km |
| Chowmahalla Palace | 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. | Closed on Fridays; allow about 2 hours | About 18 km |
| Golconda Fort | About 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. | Lots of steps; may open earlier | 22 km |
| Qutb Shahi Tombs | Roughly 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. | Check closing days before you go | 24 km |
| Hussain Sagar and Buddha statue | Promenade open daily | Better in the evening | 26 km |
| Chilkur Balaji Temple | Listed hours vary | Busy at weekends; check the day before | 23 km |
| Statue of Equality, Muchintal | Official site: 7 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. | Check the official site for current days | 12 km |
| Wonderla | Late morning to early evening | Water park hours are shorter | 22 km |
| Ramoji Film City | About 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. | Needs a full day | 45 km |
The 2-day plan
Day 1: the old city (avoid Fridays)
- 10 a.m.: Salar Jung Museum, a large collection of art and antiques built up by the Salar Jung family.
- Midday: Charminar and a walk through Laad Bazaar for bangles and pearls.
- Early afternoon: lunch in the old city.
- Afternoon: Chowmahalla Palace, arriving by 3:30 p.m. because the counter closes at 5 p.m.
- Evening: Hussain Sagar lake and the Buddha statue, or Birla Mandir.
Day 2: Golconda and the tombs
- Early morning: Golconda Fort, before the heat. Allow 2 to 3 hours.
- Midday: lunch nearby.
- Afternoon: Qutb Shahi Tombs, finishing by about 4:30 p.m.
- Evening: the Golconda sound and light show if you want it, after checking the current time.
If Friday is one of your two days, put Golconda, the Statue of Equality, Hussain Sagar, Charminar and Birla Mandir on that day, and keep Chowmahalla and Salar Jung for another day.
The 3-day plan
Keep days 1 and 2 as above and add one long day. Ramoji Film City is a full-day trip on the far side of the city. For a south-west loop near the airport, combine the Statue of Equality at Muchintal with Chilkur Balaji Temple, both within about 25 km of our hotel. Wonderla suits a family day.
Our tip. Arriving on a Saturday night? Sleep in Shamshabad, start Sunday in the old city, and leave your bags with us until your flight. We will hold them at the hotel.
Where to base yourself
For a pure sightseeing trip, a hotel in the city saves driving. If your flight is early or late, or you only have a night or two, Shamshabad is the practical choice; read where to stay near Hyderabad airport. For visits in the hot months, see Hyderabad in summer.
