Early Flight Checklist for Hyderabad

The evening before

Do the boring jobs while you still have energy. Check in online through your airline’s website or app, and download the boarding pass to your phone. Screenshot it as well, because airport Wi-Fi and mobile signal are not at their best at 4 a.m. Weigh your bags. If one is over the limit, it is far cheaper to move things around now than at the counter.

Pack your cabin bag with the things you need in the first hour: charger, medicines, ID, a bottle you can fill after security, and something to eat. Put the original ID or passport somewhere you can reach without opening a suitcase.

Fixing the time you leave

Start from the departure time and work backwards. The airport’s own advice is to reach about two hours ahead for a domestic flight and three for an international one. Then take off the travel time. From the city that is a good hour at a quiet time of day and more if the roads are busy. From us in Shamshabad it is about 10 minutes, and we plan on 20 to be safe.

We have set this out properly, with examples, in our guide to how early to reach Hyderabad airport. The short version for a 6 a.m. domestic flight from our hotel is: be at the airport by 4:00, leave the hotel at 3:40, wake up at 3:00.

Set two alarms on two devices. It sounds paranoid until it saves you.

Sorting out the car

If you want a car from the hotel, arrange it the day before and confirm the time with reception. Airport pick-up and drop are available on request at Hotel Sky International, with charges confirmed when you ask. Do not leave this to the morning.

If you are driving yourself, check that your FASTag has a balance, because the Outer Ring Road is a toll road and most toll roads in India now work on FASTag. Also remember that the airport does not let you leave a car unattended at the kerb. Drop the passengers, and move on.

Breakfast and the front desk

If your flight is early, you will not want to eat at the airport at prices you did not agree to. Tell us the night before and we will see what can be arranged. Our reception is open 24 hours, so there is always someone to hand your key to, and you can check out in the dark without hunting for a manager.

Early check-in is also possible depending on availability. If you are arriving the evening before a morning flight, it helps to tell us when you will land so we can have the room ready.

At the airport

• Go to bag drop first if you are checking a bag, then security. If you only have cabin baggage, go straight to security.
• Keep liquids and your laptop easy to reach at the screening point.
• Look at the departure board once, and then at your boarding pass for the gate. Gates are sometimes changed.
• The terminal is one long building, so allow time to walk to the gate.

Things that go wrong in Hyderabad

Two things worth knowing about are fog and rain. The Indian Meteorological Department recorded 74 fog events at the airport between 2014 and 2019, and the worst month was December, so winter mornings are the riskiest. Heavy monsoon rain has also diverted flights. Neither means you should cancel your plans, but check your flight status on your airline’s app before you leave your room, not when you arrive at the airport.
