How Early to Reach Hyderabad Airport

Hyderabad airport asks you to be there about two hours before a domestic flight and about three hours before an international one. That is the airport’s own advice, and for most trips it holds up. This guide is for the trips where it does not: the 5 a.m. departure, the rainy weekday morning, the family with four suitcases.

What the airport actually recommends

GMR Hyderabad International Airport Limited, the company that runs the airport, recommends reaching 120 minutes before a domestic departure and 180 minutes before an international one, or whatever your airline tells you. Treat the airline’s instruction as the real rule. Check-in and bag drop counters usually close about an hour before departure and the boarding gate shuts roughly half an hour before, but low-cost carriers can be stricter, so read your ticket instead of trusting a rule of thumb.

The airport has a single integrated terminal, so domestic and international flights leave from the same building, with international on the western side and domestic on the eastern side. You will not be changing terminals, which is a relief. The building is long, though, so leave a few minutes to walk to your gate.

The drive is where people lose time

From the city the airport is roughly 25 to 30 km away, and the time that takes swings a lot. At a quiet hour it usually takes somewhere between 45 minutes and an hour. At the wrong hour on the Outer Ring Road it takes far longer, and rain makes it worse. The PV Narasimha Rao Expressway, an elevated road of about 12 km that starts near Mehdipatnam, is the quick way towards the airport, but it has been closed for repairs before, so check that it is open before you plan around it.

Our advice is dull and it works. Look up the drive time for the hour you will actually be travelling, then add a cushion. For a morning flight, add a bigger cushion than feels necessary.

What the timing looks like from our hotel

Hotel Sky International is in Shamshabad, about 5 km from the airport, which is roughly 10 minutes by car in normal traffic. The arithmetic is short. Here are a few examples using the airport’s recommended arrival times and 20 minutes for the drive, which covers the kerb and the odd slow patch.

If you want a car at a fixed time, ask for airport pick-up and drop when you book. Early check-in and late check-out are possible depending on availability, so tell us your flight time in advance and we will see what we can do. Charges for the transfer are confirmed when you ask.

Things that quietly eat time

  • Bag drop queues. They are longest in the early morning and just after the evening wave of departures. If you can travel with cabin baggage only, you skip them.
  • Security. It takes as long as it takes. Keep your laptop and any liquids easy to reach.
  • Immigration on international trips. This is why the three hour advice is realistic rather than generous.
  • Documents. Have your original ID or passport ready, not just a photo of it on your phone.

Very early and very late flights

Early flights are the main reason people sleep near the airport at all. A 5 a.m. departure from the far side of the city means leaving in the middle of the night, when you could have slept until half past three. TGSRTC’s Pushpak airport buses have run through the night with reduced night fares, but timetables and fares change, so look at the current schedule before you plan around one.

For a late arrival, remember that cars cannot wait at the arrivals kerb. The airport tows vehicles left unattended, so if a driver is collecting you, tell them to keep moving or park and walk in. If you would rather not deal with any of that, our overnight stay guide explains how a late arrival and a hotel nearby can work together, and the early flight checklist covers what to sort out the night before.
