Booking a hotel near an airport looks easy. Search, sort by distance, pick the cheapest. The trouble is that “near the airport” is a phrase nobody has to prove. A hotel 3 km from the terminal and a hotel 25 km from it can both use it. These are the things we would check before booking, written by people who run a hotel in Shamshabad and have heard every kind of airport story.
1. Check the distance yourself
Do not trust the number in the listing. Open the hotel on a map, set the route to the airport, and look at the drive time for the time of day you will actually travel. A hotel that is 8 km away on paper can take 40 minutes at the wrong hour. Our own figure, for the record, is about 5 km and roughly 10 minutes by car in normal traffic.
2. Find out exactly how the transfer works
“Airport shuttle” can mean very different things. It might run every half hour. It might run only at set times. It might be a car you have to phone for, or it might be a service you pay for separately. Ask three questions: is there a transfer, what does it cost, and how do I arrange it. At Hotel Sky International, airport pick-up and drop are available on request, and we confirm the charges when you ask, before the car is booked.
3. Ask about the front desk
Airport hotels are often used at odd hours, so a reception that is open only during the day defeats the purpose. A 24-hour front desk means that a 1 a.m. arrival or a 4 a.m. departure is routine. Ours is open all day and night.
4. See whether early check-in and late check-out are possible
Most hotels have a standard check-in time, and a flight does not care about it. If you land at 7 a.m. after a night flight, a room you can use immediately is worth far more than a free breakfast. Ask whether early check-in or late check-out is possible, and be realistic about the answer: it usually depends on how full the hotel is. We offer both depending on availability, and a message in advance helps us say yes.
5. Look at parking and food
If you are driving, find out whether there is parking and whether it costs extra. Ours is free for guests. If you are landing late, find out if there is something to eat. We have a pure vegetarian restaurant on site, and breakfast and room service are available.
6. Read the recent reviews, not the average
A star rating is an average of years of stays. What you want to know is what happened last month. Search the reviews for the words “airport”, “pick-up”, “late” and “early”, and see what recent guests said. Ours, for example, mention the airport shuttle, the clean rooms and the helpful staff.
7. Think about what happens if the flight changes
Flights are delayed, rebooked and cancelled. Ask about the cancellation and change policy before you book, and ask whether the hotel can hold a room if your flight slips by a few hours. If you are booking direct, you can usually ask this in a call. For delays and cancellations, our overnight stay guide covers what Indian aviation rules say airlines owe you.
A short checklist
- Real drive time to the airport at your travel hour
- Transfer: yes or no, cost, how to arrange it
- Reception open 24 hours
- Early check-in and late check-out, subject to availability
- Parking and food
- Recent reviews mentioning the airport
- Cancellation and change terms

Quick answers
How close should an airport hotel be?
As close as you can manage. For an early flight, under 10 minutes is ideal, and under 20 is acceptable.
Do all airport hotels offer a shuttle?
No. Some do, some charge, and some do not. Always ask.
Is it worth paying more to be closer?
If your flight is early or late, usually yes, because you save time and avoid the risk of traffic.
