Layover in Hyderabad: What to Do in 6, 10 and 24 Hours

Short answer: with 6 hours or less, stay at the airport. With 8 to 10 hours you can rest at a nearby hotel, or make a short outing if your visa allows you to leave. With 24 hours you can see the old city properly. Before you plan anything, settle one question: can you leave the airport on your ticket and visa?

First: can you leave the airport?

This decides everything, and the rules depend on your nationality and ticket. In general, a passenger in direct transit who stays inside the airport does not need an Indian visa. Leaving the airport means passing immigration with a valid Indian visa, such as an e-visa where you are eligible. Your airline transit desk and the official Indian visa website are where to confirm your case.

If your two flights are on separate tickets, expect to collect your bags, clear immigration and check in again. That needs a visa and a longer gap than a single-ticket connection.

If you stay at the airport

  • Lounges, left luggage, free Wi-Fi and a medical centre are available; ask at an information desk for the current locations and access.
  • Eat, charge your phone, and walk the terminal. It is one building, so you will not change terminals.

A 6-hour layover

Stay inside. Immigration, the drive and the return leave almost no time. If you must go out, a hotel is a better use of the gap than a sightseeing run.

A 10-hour layover

This is the borderline case. If you may leave the airport, a hotel room near the airport lets you shower and sleep for a few hours and return with margin. Our hotel is about 8 km by road, and airport pick-up is complimentary on most stays; see airport pick-up and drop options. For a short outing, pick one thing close by, such as the Statue of Equality, about 12 km from our hotel. More in things to do near Hyderabad airport.

Our tip. Landing at 6 a.m. with a 7 p.m. flight? Come straight to us, rest until late morning, see Charminar and eat in the afternoon, and be back at the terminal about three hours before an international departure.

A 24-hour layover

Treat it as a short city break. Sleep near the airport the night you land, spend the day in the old city (Charminar, Laad Bazaar, Chowmahalla Palace, Salar Jung Museum), and return in the evening. Chowmahalla Palace and Salar Jung Museum are closed on Fridays, so plan around that. Our 2-day and 3-day plans show how to sequence the sights.

If your flight is delayed during a layover

A long delay changes the picture: the airline may owe you meals and, in some cases, a hotel. We explain what the rules say in flight delays at Hyderabad airport.

Leaving the airport means clearing Indian immigration with a valid visa. Passengers who stay airside on a direct transit generally do not need one. Rules vary by nationality, so check with your airline and the official Indian visa website.

How long should a layover be to leave the airport?

As a rule of thumb at least 8 to 10 hours, to allow for immigration, the trip, and returning in time for check-in.
