Sometimes the sensible plan is to stop trying to be clever with the clock and just sleep near the airport. A late landing, a 5 a.m. departure, a ten hour gap between connections, a flight that has been cancelled at midnight: all of these are easier with a bed ten minutes away than with a plastic seat at the gate.
When an overnight stay makes sense
There is no rule that says you must stay somewhere. Plenty of people sit out a layover in the terminal and are fine. A hotel starts to earn its cost when the gap is long enough to sleep properly, usually five or six hours or more, or when the alternative is crossing the whole city in the dark and crossing it back again a few hours later.
- A late arrival. You land after midnight and your meeting or your family is not until morning. Going into the city means a long drive at an awkward hour.
- An early departure. Getting to the airport for a 5 or 6 a.m. flight from the other side of Hyderabad means a very short night. Staying in Shamshabad cuts the drive to about 10 minutes.
- A long layover. Hyderabad has a lot of connecting traffic, and some of the connections are long.
- A disrupted flight. Delays and cancellations are the least predictable reason, and the one where knowing your rights helps most.
If your flight is delayed or cancelled
India’s aviation regulator, the DGCA, publishes rules on what airlines owe passengers when a flight is disrupted. They are written in a document called CAR Section 3, Series M, Part IV, which was last revised in 2023. Reading the original is dull, so here is how the main points are usually summarised. Please treat this as a guide and check the DGCA text or your airline for the exact position on your ticket.
- For longer delays the airline is expected to provide meals and refreshments, with the threshold depending on how long the flight is scheduled to be.
- If the delay stretches beyond about six hours, you are generally entitled to an alternative flight or a full refund.
- Hotel accommodation, including transfers, is generally expected when a delay is very long or when a delay hits a flight scheduled to leave in the middle of the night.
- If an airline cancels with less than 24 hours’ notice, it should offer a refund or an alternative flight and may owe fixed compensation as well, which the rules put at Rs 5,000, Rs 7,500 or Rs 10,000 depending on the length of the flight, or the base fare plus fuel charge if that is lower.
- None of this applies in the same way when the cause is outside the airline’s control, such as bad weather or air traffic control restrictions.
That last point matters in Hyderabad. The Indian Meteorological Department recorded 74 fog events at the airport between 2014 and 2019, with December the worst month, and flights have been diverted to other cities in dense fog. Heavy monsoon rain has also diverted flights. In those cases, the airline may owe you a rebooking or refund but not compensation, which is when having your own place to sleep is useful.
Making a long layover work
If you have a long wait and you are allowed to leave the airport, the first thing to settle is that last clause. Whether you can leave depends on your visa, your nationality and your airline’s rules, and the airline’s transit desk is the place to ask. Do not book a hotel on the assumption that you will be allowed out.
If you are staying inside, the airport has options. Encalm runs lounges, and the airport has left-luggage lockers operated by Tuckit, free Wi-Fi for two hours, and a medical centre. They are useful for a gap of a few hours. For a real night, a bed is better.
What to ask a hotel before you book
- Is there a pick-up from the airport, and can they confirm the time for your flight rather than a general promise? At Hotel Sky International, airport pick-up and drop are available on request.
- Is the reception open round the clock? Ours is, which matters when your flight lands at 2 a.m.
- Can you check in early or check out late? Both are possible with us depending on availability, so tell us your arrival time in advance.
- Is there parking, if you are driving? It is free for guests here.
- Is there food when you arrive? We have a pure vegetarian restaurant on site, which several guests have mentioned in their reviews.
We are about 5 km from the airport, roughly 10 minutes by car in normal traffic. If you are working out timings, our guide to how early to reach the airport has a table you can use.
